I pretty much love school. It’s been a lengthy affair, which featured a brief cooling off period in late middle school and early high school, but we’re fully-fledged, head over heels again, in case you were worried. Amy wrote of her love affair with fashion; mine is with school. I could make it sound more romantic and alliterative by calling it a love of learning, but I don’t think that’s really what it is. I just love the school environment.
I had a Prof. once ask me why I wasn’t sure I wanted to be one as well, since it’s the best job around: no one cares where you are or what you’re doing all day, as long as you don’t miss your classes — which don’t even take up that much time. Tough argument to refute.
Anyways, the point of all this sickening sap is that I’m obviously excited for the first day back, this Monday. I’m getting ready for it. Gearing up, if you will. You could even somewhat reasonably allege that I’m jonesin’ for it.
The first day of classes confers all the benefits of school without recalling (m)any of the drawbacks. Getting to see friends — and some legitimately interesting professors — again. Reacquainting yourself with campus, a climate where you’re no longer a cheap summer labourer: instead you’re surrounded, and sometimes even respected, by your peers.
There remains only one small issue: what to wear while being brought back to it all?
I’ve always found that my first day outfit must aim to strike a more precarious balance than most: impressive, indicating a bent towards fashion, yet effortlessly chic and not indicating a moment of excessive thought.
I never want to appear as if I’m trying too hard to get all dressed up on the first day. I generally don’t want to come off in that over-thought, overwrought way (even though I betray myself in this blog), but especially not on this day, filled as it is with its rituals of meeting new people, and sizing them up.
I’m still shopping my closet, striving to find what looks fresh but not newly-purchased for the occasion, and hoping that if I get the pleasure of encountering any readers whom I don’t already call friends (if these phantoms exist), my choices won’t fall flat in the face of my stated aims.
It’ll all depend on how I feel Monday morning. Let’s see whether or not I end up a first-day fashion felon.

I’m sure you will look awesome, as always.
Don’t spend too much time making your decision, you should get a good sleep before the big day.
And don’t worry, you’re not alone in your love for school. Summer is WAY too long!
What did you end up wearing?
Mackenzie: Thanks! And don’t fret, I didn’t lose sleep over the issue. I hope you’re enjoying your classes thus far; I am.
Miranda: I went with what was actually my first idea: an over-sized white shirt with a patterned yellow miniskirt and a “boyfriend” blazer.
In fact, I was happily surprised that morning to find myself on the same wavelength as Garance, http://www.garancedore.fr/en/2009/09/14/clic-clac-la-mode-attaque/, without having consulted her first.
Unfortunately, my comment to that effect on her post has been refusing to work.
