Looking through the past few weeks of MTV’s comic-blog Splash Page – yes, I said MTV – I stumbled upon a post regarding a neat little project written by American Splendor author Harvey Pekar.
SMITH Magazine’s “The Pekar Project” is a webcomic-format collection of works written by Pekar and illustrated by Tara Seibel, Joseph Remnant, Rick Parker and Sean Pryor. Being one of those who had no idea that Pekar existed until Paul Giamatti’s performance in the 2003 film of American Splendor, I find it pretty cool that a comic-writing veteran like Pekar is doing a webcomic.
It’s no real surprise that he’s found a new direction in getting comics out there since he’s been known to collaborate with a lot of people to share his life experiences with the public. The list of artists he’s worked with includes Chester Brown, Alison Bechdel, and long-time associate and friend Robert Crumb. If you’re running short of your general autobiographic-comic fix, what better way to get it back than by reading from the master of it all?
