About

The Boar is a student-run publication created by and for the students at the University of Waterloo. Our mandate is to publish  quality works that showcase student work in the fields of the arts and humanities, and provide an opportunity to learn the inner workings of the publishing process (be it print or online). Through our publication(s) we strive to provide a forum for discussion, a medium for expression, and a learning environment for all students at the University of Waterloo.

Mission Statement

For those who like a bit more formality, our official mission statement is: “To create a quality publication that is representative of the diversity within the University of Waterloo while providing a learning environment for students interested in topics related to the arts and humanities and in creating a publication.”

Goals

Along similar lines as above, our goals as an organization are as follows:

  1. Increase awareness of the arts and humanities, and further the sense of identity and community within the University of Waterloo.
  2. Promote diversity and social responsibility on campus.
  3. Provide a medium for students to express themselves artistically, publish work pertaining to their discipline or a field of interest, and further investigate their understanding of the arts and humanities.
  4. To be financially sustainable through fundraising and other means of revenue generation (it should be noted that the aim in creating revenue is not to create profit, but to break even and ensure that the organization’s needs are met).
  5. To foster media awareness and education on campus.

History

The Boar was founded as an independent student publication in 2008 by Ashley Csanady, Paul Matheson, and group of very talented and dedicated volunteers. The goal was to publish a magazine that served the students of the Faculty of Arts at UW, with official support from ASU and the Faculty of Arts and monetary support from AEF. In 2009, the publication moved to make a greater push to its online property, expanding its scope outside of the Faculty of Arts, and to the University in general.
