The Boar Blogging Project Is Growing!

And we want you!

Listen up bloggers, vloggers, new media photographers, musicians, and artists alike! If you’ve got a passionate outlook on the arts, The Boar Blogging Project is looking for you. In the coming weeks we’ll be launching a blogging structure that promotes weekly blogs on a six-day schedule, so from Monday to Saturday you can tune into different campus viewpoints on all manner of topics, right here on The Boar website. From sports to politics, to architecture and fashion, to cultural identity, music, and much, much more, our aim is to create a space where everyone in the UW community can share in the conversation.

And what form will this conversation take? Whatever the bloggers like — from podcasts to video, to photo posts and annotated links, to short observational pieces to in-depth essays: in short, whatever suits your topic best, suits The Boar just fine.

Want to get involved? Pitch us a topic for a weekly blog, including a sample first post and a list of the media forms you hope to use, in an email to Margaret Clark (mclark@theboar.ca). We’re going to work hard to make sure there’s a place for everyone, so please don’t hesitate to express your interest and ask for more information, even if you’re not sure what you’d want to do.

Also, if a weekly blog is too much work for you, why not apply for a two-week guest blog? You can post as much or as little as you like in this time frame, to convey how the world (and especially the arts on UW campus) looks to you. Pitch a summary of what you think makes your perspective so distinct, and a list of the media forms you’d like to use, to Margaret Clark (mclark@theboar.ca). Again, we aren’t looking to turn campus voices away, so get connected and we’ll try hard to find a place for you!

And ATTENTION GRADS, new and impending: Think your valedictorian’s address didn’t speak for you? Think you can do better? SEND IN YOUR WORDS OF WISDOM AND REFLECTION (500 to 1250 words, to be precise) for a special blog entitled “We, Valedictorian.”

Keep checking The Boar website for the launch of the first of the new Boar Blogs (we’re hoping for June 29!). In the meantime, contact Margaret (again, that’s mclark@theboar.ca) to take part in the opening line-up!

To all fans, foes, and friends of The Boar alike,

As you may have noticed, we haven’t posted much over the past few weeks. As all of us at The Boar have exams and families, we won’t be up and running again until the first few weeks of May. Even crazed journalists need their sleep, so this little piggy is taking a nap (for now).

Be sure to check back for more exciting content, changes, and events throughout the summer term!

Cheers,

One sleepy little online publication.

Dearest Readers,

In the last few weeks, you may have noticed the introduction of our latest feature, “Your Life on Arts”, an arts and humanities events listing for the Waterloo area.

The listing will include concerts, art exhibits, gallery openings, lectures, plays, film screenings, performance art, poetry, discussion panels, student elections, drum circles, educational opportunities, fundraisers, and a whole slew of other fun and exciting events on the UW campus and around the KW area. All of the events listed will have some tie to the arts or humanities and will be open to student involvement and/or attendance.

The event listing is updated at least once a week in the regular term to be an up-to-date and fresh way to find exciting and interesting things to do when you should be studying!

If you have an event that you’d like to see listed on “Your Life on Arts,” email the details (date, time, location, admission price, topical details and contact information/website address) to our Pub Editor at pub@theboar.ca.

Stay tuned to “Your Life on Arts” to find fresh ways to connect with the Waterloo arts community!

With twisty-tailed love,

Porcellino & your friends at The Boar.

Dearest Readers,

Regular visitors to the website may have noticed a plethora of changes lately. Pages have moved around, stuff has gone missing and re-appeared, new, exciting features have been added…it’s all very disorienting, we’re sure.

Well, it’s all apart of our transition from print to our new all-online format!
Our amazing webmaster, Mo, is trying out new features and modifying our website on a daily basis to figure out what works best for us (and for you, beloved arts fans). As he works his magic, you will continue to see strange and wonderful things happen all over the site.

This includes our new and fabulous local events listing, “Your Life on Art”, our beautiful new art and photography slideshows (like the new one showcasing paintings by Frank Bediako, and that fancy little “feedback” button on the right hand side of your screen that is screaming — just BEGGING— to be clicked (do it now, you know you want to!).

Other, less visible changes have also occurred within The Boar. Although we loved making print issues, we have discovered all the freedoms that come with living online! For starters, we no longer have to live by the printer’s harsh schedule – good-bye submission deadlines! You are welcome to submit your poetry, short fiction, essays (with the approval of your instructor), research articles, opinion editorials, prose, art, photography, reviews (theatre, literature, music, art, etc.), and just about anything else you can think of that relates to the Arts and Humanities ANY TIME YOU WANT (well, almost, even we take break during final exams and in between terms). To submit work for consideration, or for more info, email us at editor@theboar.ca.
Going all online also means we don’t have to be as strict with word limits. We have increase a lot of our word limit suggestions for submissions now that we’re no longer bound by the size of the printed page. For full details on what we accept, how long it can be, and all those other important facts, check out our updated submission standards.

As we move into the future, fresh features will continue to pop up as our website is developed. We encourage you to drop by often and see how the website is coming along, and what new work has been contributed by the smart, talented, and far-from-Boar-ing Arts community at UWaterloo.

If you’d like to get involved with The Boar, let us know! Email us at editor@theboar.ca today! Students and recent alumni from all faculties are welcome!

With piggy affection,

Porcellino & your friends at The Boar.

Since The Boar’s inception, Imprint ,the University of Waterloo’s independent student newspaper, has generously supported our activities through the use of office space and equipment. We applaud Imprint for its contribution to diversifying and growing student media on campus and remain grateful for continued assistance and encouragement.
