So we’re back for the fifth Coffeeshop Podcast from the Boar. Make sure you listen to the fourth Podcast if you want to know what’s going on (the stirring conclusion to… WHAT WOULD NOK SAVE FROM A FIRE I DON’T KNOW!) and see if you can spot the hidden Russel Peters reference. If you can, I’ll give you a lolly. Hi there! It’s so good to see you. How are you? I just ran into Jack a minute ago and we were talking about you; this is so crazy.

Coffeeshop Podcast

Welcome to the first podcast from the Coffeeshop section of The Boar.

Editors Nokyoung Xayasane (Poetry) and Phil Froklage (Short Fiction) reading “Self” and “Cloud”. This podcast is a little different, since we thought you might like to see some of our work before you decide to submit your own.

A typical Coffeeshop podcast will have us (or a guest reader) narrating our favorite short story and poem of the week, and having a little conversation about what aspects of the work we found most compelling, or what was most interesting about the editing process. We also plan to include original music from the Waterloo community. We promise that we will read every submission given to us.

Make sure you check the Boar homepage for fiction and poetry that couldn’t make the podcast - we’ll continue publishing as things pour in.

Submit your work to coffeeshop@theboar.ca, and we look forward to hearing from you soon! We plan to make The Boar the premier literary magazine among Canadian universities, and help launch the careers of the next generation of young writers (and, just maybe, showcase the work of some armchair authors too)!

EDIT: Hi, it’s Phil here. I just wanted to say that if you can listen to Nok’s poem and not feel anything, there’s a chance you might be made of stone. Also, I’m watching this TVO documentary about bats, and there is this one shot of the bats in their cave, shot with a thermal camera so they’re all glowing orange from within like a bunch of neon bat torches and it might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.

EDIT: Hello, it’s Nok. Thanks for the kind words, Phil. Not to make this a lovefest, but my favourite part is from 6:40-7:01. I see that you’ve tagged Virginia Woolf to this post, but where’s the tag for J.D. Salinger and Joseph Heller? Also, I’d recommend that you pick up the documentary series “Planet Earth”. It’s truly breath-taking.
