We are looking for anything and everything that pertains to the arts and humanities. So, if you have an idea you don’t think you see here, send an e-mail to editor@theboar.ca and find out if it’s right for The Boar.

Submission Standards

Submissions Standards are as follows:

  • All contributors must be a student registered at the University of Waterloo or affiliated with the Faculty of Arts.
  • Please note that students from all faculties are welcome to contribute, as long as the topic of the piece is related to the Arts. Preference may be given to students from the Faculty of Arts.
  • Recent graduates (within one year) may also contribute, but preference will be given to currently registered students.
  • All contributions must be original, and have not previously appeared in any publication
  • All contributions must be well written and edited, to show that the author put thought and consideration into their piece.
  • All contributions must be submitted as a JPG, RTF, DOC, DOCX, or PDF files.
  • All graphics and photos must be 300 DPI.
  • All facts must be correct and verifiable.
  • All quotations must be accurate and fair.
  • All notes from research and interview records must be submitted along with the final story.
  • All submissions must be in the English language (some exceptions allowed).
  • Nothing libelous or false will be accepted.

Breakdown of content by section

The Coffeeshop
Its focus is fiction and poetry, as well as film, music, and literary criticism and foreign language content.
(Disciplines it pertains to: English Literature and Rhetoric and Professional Writing, Drama and Speech Comm, the Languages [review content only] and Music)

Fiction

  • 5000 word max (shorter is preferred)
  • well edited
  • original

Poetry

  • under 500 words or shorter than 30 lines
  • shorter preferred

Lit Criticism, Film Criticism, Theatre Commentary, Music Criticism

  • under 2000 words
  • Above all it should be remembered that we are not hoping to run a typical book, CD, or movie review like you may find in Imprint. We want to go further and deeper than that. We want criticism, not just review.

The Library
This section includes features content based primarily in the humanities and social sciences. From political commentary, to historical inquiry to sociological musings, this section contains a few meaty articles an issue.
(Disciplines it pertains to: History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Geography, Peace and Conflict Studies, Women’s Studies, and Economics).

FIRST SUBMIT 200 word pitches for article that include the focus, potential sources, and a quick synopsis.

Feature length articles that pertain to the humanities that can include, but are not limited to:

  • research and innovation
  • analysis and commentary
  • history and historical background
  • at least one source must not be affiliated with the university
  • suggested maximum length: 3000 words. Consideration may be given to longer articles at the discretion of editors.

The Gallery
A section devoted to visual and graphic art, as well as photography, art history and criticism. Profiles of UW and local artists would also fall under this section.
(Disciplines it pertains to: Primarily Fine Arts, but arguably it also includes History, Rhetoric and any Marketing classes)

  • artist profiles

  • photo essays

All submissions must be full CMYK tiffs with a resolution of 300 dpi.

IMPORTANT:

As mentioned on multiple occasions earlier in this explanation, all submissions MUST be original. By submitting to The Boar, you are stating and verifying that you are the sole author and owner of all work submitted and that it has not been previously published elsewhere.

The Boar reserves the right to edit, publish, and re-publish, either online or in print, all submissions received. Submitting to The Boar signifies agreement to these, and the above-outlined, terms. If you have questions or require clarification, please email editor@theboar.ca prior to submitting.
